Population

The Urban Honolulu Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1 increased from 629,176 in 1970 to 953,207 in 2010. That was an increase of 51.5 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 57,149 in 1970 to 194,662 in 2010. That was an increase of 240.6 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 9.1 percent to 20.4 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 32.6 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. In it, domestic migration (NDM) was consistently negative. The primary factor in population increase was B-D.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the principal factor in population increase in all periods.
